(obama) BIDEN For President
After much media hype and a round of “not-it” by the potential Vice Presidential picks, Obama finally selected his running mate.
Typically, the VP choice is selected to make up for something that might be missing to help round out the ticket. But Obama is missing so much, it would be difficult to find someone who possessed all of the qualities that were lacking. The problem is compounded because if he did select such a person, that person would be more qualified than himself, and would overshadow him and his campaign.
Obama had an impossible task in picking the VP: He needed someone who had experience and clout, but not someone who would outshine him. He was only partly successful with his selection of Joe Biden.
Joe Biden is an experienced and respected leader and statesman with an established record and credibility with both Democrats and Republicans. He is a good choice. In fact, he’s too good. Obama pales in comparison. Biden overshadows Obama in each of these areas and demonstrates that Biden is vastly more qualified to be President. It will be impossible for people to ignore that the ticket is reversed - Biden should be the Presidential candidate, and Obama should be in a supporting role as the Vice Presidential candidate.
Obama’s own campaign strategies will also come back to haunt him. His campaign has pushed the idea that McCain is aging, but both Biden and McCain are elder statesmen. What the Obama campaign portrays as “old” others see as “experienced”. The selection of Biden highlights the sharp contrast in the levels of experience between Obama and both McCain and Biden.
